What is a Structured Learning Experience?

A Structured Learning Experience (SLE) (N.J.A.C. 6A:19-1.2, NJDOE) is an experiential, rigorous and supervised, educational experience designed to provide students with exposure to the skills, requirements and responsibilities of specific job titles or job groups, and to assist them in gaining employment skills and making career and educational decisions. SLEs may take place on RHS campus or at an off-campus location.

What are examples of Structured Learning Experiences?

Examples of SLEs at RHS include but are not limited to; lab assistant, office assistant, student translator or ELL assistant, food services assistant, showcase curator, media specialist, technology assistant, teaching assistant, etc. Off-campus SLEs may take place at a business, organization, medical facility, town-hall, etc. Because of the rotating block schedule, off-campus SLEs typically take place outside of the school day. When the Option II period falls at the end of the school day an SLE student may leave campus to report to the SLE site.

How can a Structured Learning Experience be secured?

Once the student has gone through the application process to get their experience approved, the student is responsible for collaborating with his/her professional mentor, the Option II Coordinator, and parent/guardian to develop a Structured Learning Plan. The plan for the SLE should meet or exceed New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. All SLE students are required to make a formal presentation at the Option II Showcase in June.
