Self  Directed  Learning

-  The best way to predict your future is to create it.  -

-Abe Lincoln-

Self-Directed Learning is a uique learning experience designed entirely by the student to meet individual objectives related to student intersts and career goals. Self-Directed Learning differs from a Structured Learning Experience in that it does not require the student to report to a worksite or supervisor during his/her Option II time. While Self-Directed Learning may incorporate career shadowing, service learning and/or collaborative projects with a business/company/agency, etc. the learning does not center around one single placement.

Once the application is approved, the student is responsible for collaborating with his/her professional mentor, the Option II Coordinator, and parent/guardian to develop a Self-Directed Learning Plan. This plan is designed to meet or exceed New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.

A student in Self-Directed Learning may design his/her learning plan to incorporate online courses, trainings and certifications, problem-based learning, etc. A variety of experiences can come together under the student's "essential question" which he/she creates as a basis for his/her study. It is the responsibility of the Optoin II Coordinator to make sure that the learning experiences outlined in the student's Self-Directed Learning Plan are rigorous and robust enough to warrant the issuing of RHS credit and to support the student in supplementing the learning plan if needed.
